Digital photography captures a lot of information but it’s cold. Film gives you less information but it’s emotional information. And what do we care about, information or emotion? You can cry looking at a contact sheet, it is incredible.
With the exception of birth and Fresh48 sessions, I choose to shoot exclusively with medium format film. Not the type of film a videographer would use but old school rolls of film you load into your camera and send to a lab to develop. So why in this day and age of digital photography would I go back to such a slow 'old fashioned' process and what does it mean for you as the client?
In my opinion nothing beats the look of film. I love the soft colours, the grain in a black and white image, the way film captures emotion and evokes a feeling of nostalgia. When I'm shooting with film I am completely focused on the scene in front of me, waiting for just the right moment in time to press the shutter. Each shot is intentional and just as important as the next, this allows us to slow down and our session feels much more relaxed.
With film you will see grain and movement but this is part of what makes film photography so beautiful. We're not dealing in megapixels here, it's not high definition. By not highlighting every little imperfection on your skin, film images are more flattering!
After our session, I send the film to my professional film lab and we wait patiently for the results to arrive back. This process takes around 3 weeks but it's worth the wait! My lab develops the film and then scans the negatives, sending me the digital files to edit. If you choose to purchase the digital files, you can use these just like any other file to make prints from or share online.
